How A Tableau Tutorial Opened The Door To Data

I Didn’t Have a Grand Career Plan
I didn’t begin with a perfect career plan. I began by learning one useful skill.
HOW MY DATA CAREER ACTUALLY BEGAN

I Didn’t Have a Grand Career Plan

I had a chart.

Learning Tableau opened the world of data to me because it was incredibly easy to begin.

I didn’t need to understand databases, pipelines or machine learning.

The wider Tableau and data analytics ecosystem

I could connect a spreadsheet, drag a few fields onto the screen and immediately see something useful.

That gave me an entry point.

I wasn’t trying to become a “Data Something Something.” I was simply following a beginner tutorial and learning one useful skill.

🌐 THEN THE WORLD GOT BIGGER

Then I Discovered the Data World

Turns out, there are a lot of us in here.

Once I started working with data, I met people performing very different roles:

🚂 DATA ENGINEERS
Moved, connected and prepared the data.
📊 BUSINESS & REPORTING ANALYSTS
Investigated data and explained what it meant.
🧠 DATA SCIENTISTS
Modelled patterns and predicted future outcomes.

Slowly, I started understanding how everyone fit together. The mysterious “data industry” began making sense because I was finally close to the work.

🚪 YOUR FIRST ROLE IS AN ENTRY POINT

Get In First. Navigate Later.

Your first data job doesn’t need to be your final destination.

Don’t put pressure on yourself to plan the next 20 years. Begin with something useful and let experience show you what comes next.

LEARN ONE USEFUL SKILL
BUILD SOMETHING
GET YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR

Once you’re inside, follow what interests you. That is essentially what I did.
