BEHIND EVERY TRUSTED DASHBOARD
What Is Data Cleansing?
Before you can analyse business data, you often need to make sense of the mess.
Real-world data is messy.
Not because businesses are incompetent. It’s messy because businesses constantly change.
Think about what happens to a company over 10, 20 or 50 years:
| • |
Employees and leaders come and go
| • |
Old systems are replaced by new technology
| • |
Companies merge, restructure and change processes
| • |
Someone, somewhere, still has an Excel file from 2007
The result is data created by different people, for different purposes, inside different systems.
🧹 MAKING SENSE OF THE MESS
What Does Data Cleansing Actually Do?
Data cleansing transforms inconsistent information into something that can be reliably analysed.
| ✓ |
Combine data from multiple systems
| ✓ |
Standardise inconsistent names and categories
| ✓ |
Remove duplicates and handle missing values
| ✓ |
Correct data types and reshape tables
| ✓ |
Apply consistent business rules
In the real world, this is where a huge part of an analyst’s work happens.

🧠 DO ANALYSTS NEED THIS SKILL?
Absolutely
Businesses don’t hand analysts perfectly organised datasets ready for a dashboard. They hand you real business data.
Your value isn’t simply knowing how to build a chart. It’s being able to turn information scattered across years of systems, employees and decisions into something people can trust and understand.
